Summer E-newsletter: Upcoming Events

Aug 9, 2011

Dear Friends,

One of the most important aspects of my job is to be accessible to the people I represent, and it has never been more important than at this time of great economic uncertainty. I want to thank the thousands of you who participated in my telephone town hall last week when we discussed the just-passed debt legislation in the hour before the House of Representatives voted on the bill. (You can read about my reasons for voting for the legislation despite it falling far short of the measures for which I advocated.)

In the coming weeks, I am holding a series of public forums designed to offer constituents further opportunities to ask about the issues on your minds. This Thursday, August 11, I will be touring senior centers across the state and later this month, I am planning a pair of town halls. The first will be Tuesday August 16 at the Silver Lake Community Center in Providence, and the second will be in Westerly on August 30. I am also holding meetings with businesses, non-profit organizations and others to discuss the challenges Rhode Island faces as well as potential action to take at the national and local levels. Read below about my recent visit to netWORKri to address our most urgent problem: high unemployment and underemployment. More details about future events will be posted on my website as they are confirmed.

As your representative, I enjoy hearing your thoughts, whether in person or in writing. Please stay in touch via email, Facebook and Twitter to keep the conversation going, and check out my YouTube and Flickr pages.

I hope to see you at an upcoming event.

Sincerely,

Jim Langevin

Creating Jobs is Priority #1

The most disappointing aspect of the debt ceiling debate was that it distracted us from dealing with our jobs crisis. Our country will never reach its potential unless we create more quality job opportunities and train our workforce to compete globally in emerging industries with the most potential for growth. That means having a plan to lead in innovation and education, with investments that support and enhance organizations like netWORKri and the services they provide through their career and training centers. At a visit to their West Warwick facility last week, I spoke with job seekers and Director Charlie Fogarty of the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training about solutions.

Senior Center Tour

Join me on Thursday, August 11, as I tour senior centers across the state. The tour begins at 10am at the Pilgrim Senior Center in Warwick, continues at noon in Cranston and concludes with a 2pm stop in Westerly. During each visit, I will answer your questions, and an expert on investment fraud will join me to talk about ways in which seniors can best protect their nest eggs.
