Dear Friends,

Whether it’s pain at the pump, meeting rent or mortgage payments, or affording educational training to adapt to a changing job market, I recognize the challenges many Rhode Islanders are facing. We continue to make progress improving our economy, but it can’t be fast enough after the worst downturn in 80 years. I won’t let up my focus on doing whatever it takes to help get through these difficult times.

With high gas prices again wreaking havoc on families’ budgets, I proposed a series of steps to reduce the burden of fuel costs now and prevent future crises. I have supported affordable housing initiatives and advocated for programs that create jobs and provide Rhode Islanders with the skills they need to take advantage of new opportunities. Many families can’t afford higher energy and education costs and are in danger of losing their homes through no fault of their own. All elected officials need to commit to working together to find areas of agreement and address these challenges.

As your representative, I enjoy hearing your thoughts, whether in person or in writing. Please stay in touch via email, Facebook and Twitter to keep the conversation going, and check out my YouTube and Flickr pages.

Sincerely,

Jim Langevin

Investing in Transportation Is Key to Job Creation

I recently met with Federal Highway Administrator as part of my effort to ensure our state’s infrastructure is a top priority. At an event with business and community leaders, we discussed opportunities and challenges facing our transportation system. I have also fought for new projects that will create immediate jobs in the Ocean State and attract more business in the future.

Prioritizing STEM Education

At a Rhode Island conference on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, I emphasized the need to close the skills gap between industry needs and school curricula to provide better job opportunities and growth that we can sustain in the years ahead. We must make sure educational opportunities are not only affordable and accessible for our students, but geared for the cutting edge fields of the 21st century. To strengthen the pipeline for these jobs, our schools, businesses, and non-profit organizations must work together toward common goals through initiatives such as our Cyber Challenge.

Making Housing Affordable

Providing affordable housing in our state is critical to getting our economy back on track. That’s why I am supporting efforts like those of Crossroads Rhode Island, which I joined to celebrate the completion of 24 energy-efficient affordable homes in North Kingstown. We have a responsibility to assist those who are unjustly bearing the brunt of the recession, and who are unable to fully contribute to our economic recovery without stable housing. The North Kingstown effort is a model for addressing our housing crisis by partnering federal, state and private entities to maximize our resources and reduce costs.
