Serviceman from USS Roosevelt to Thank Students, Langevin for Spearheading 'Operation: Dear American Hero'

Apr 10, 2002
(Warwick, R.I.)–Congressman Jim Langevin today announced that the Public Affairs Officer for the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, Lt. John Oliveira, will visit Stone Hill Elementary School, 21 Village Ave., in Cranston this Friday at 11:00 a.m. to thank the schoolchildren for their participation in Langevin’s ‘Operation: Dear American Hero.’

Langevin coordinated ‘Operation: Dear American Hero’ last December to encourage Rhode Island schoolchildren to send holiday greetings to troops serving in the Roosevelt Carrier Group, which recently returned from deployment as part of the war on terror.  The letter writing campaign produced over 1,700 cards and letters, which arrived on the carrier on Christmas Eve.

“Thanks to the hard work and patriotic spirit of hundreds of young Rhode Islanders, we were able to send some holiday cheer to our servicemen and women who are putting their lives on the line each and every day in this war on terror,” said Congressman Langevin, a member of the House Armed Services Committee.  “I am pleased to welcome Lt. Col. John Oliveira to the very school where this letter writing campaign was announced to meet our young patriots.”
