Langevin Votes to Require Universal Background Checks for Firearm Sales

Feb 27, 2019 Issues: Gun Safety

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) issued the following statement after voting in favor of H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Check Act of 2019, which passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 240-190:

“The gun violence epidemic plaguing the nation is a true national emergency, and the past several years of Congressional inaction is reprehensible. I am pleased that the Democratic majority is finally treating gun violence prevention legislation like the urgent priority it is.

“Universal background checks are supported by 97% of gun-owning Americans. The common-sense reforms in the Bipartisan Background Check Act will keep our communities safe by ensuring dangerous people cannot circumvent the background check process online or at gun shows. Universal background checks are just the first step in addressing the scourge of gun violence in America and ensuring that our vows of ‘never again’ are not hollow platitudes. The American people cannot afford any further inaction.”
