Langevin Votes to End U.S. Support for Saudi-led War in Yemen

Feb 13, 2019 Issues: Armed Services

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement after voting in favor of the H.J. Res 37, which would prevent United States forces from engaging in hostilities in Yemen absent explicit Congressional authorization and which passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 248-177:

“Yemen is suffering one of the worst humanitarian crises this century. The United States must contribute positively to ending the civil war by working with our allies and partners to promote meaningful, diplomatic solutions. The devastation being wrought on the Yemeni people will not end through the deaths of more innocent civilians. I am proud to join with my colleagues to keep us out of this conflict by asserting Congress’s Constitutional role to decide matters of war. This resolution will allow for the continuation of important counterterrorism missions while requiring the President to make his case before Congress if he wishes to provide direct military support to the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen.”
