Langevin Statement on Trump’s Nomination of Patrick Shanahan to be Secretary of Defense

May 9, 2019 Issues: Armed Services

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement regarding President Trump’s announcement that he is nominating Acting Secretary Patrick Shanahan to be the next United States Secretary of Defense:

“It is inexcusable that President Trump left an essential cabinet position vacant for an unprecedented 140 days before nominating a replacement. The Secretary of Defense is one of the first people the President calls in a time of crisis, and not having a permanent Secretary of Defense in place for such an extended period of time harms our national security.

“The President’s actions notwithstanding, I support the culture of innovation Acting Secretary Shanahan is bringing to the Department. My interactions with the Acting Secretary have been positive to date, and I look forward to working with him in his new capacity should he be confirmed. Most of all, I hope he will be unafraid to speak truth to power as his predecessor did.”
