Langevin Statement on Transgender Service Member Policy

Mar 23, 2018 Issues: Armed Services, LGBT Rights

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement regarding the Department of Defense’s recommendation to ban transgender individuals from serving in the military:

“The policy proposal put forth by the Pentagon dishonors the bravery and dedication of our service members. Reverting to a discriminatory policy is an insult to the patriots who put their lives in danger every day to protect our country. For years, transgender individuals have served in our military with distinction, and it is critical to our readiness that the Department of Defense continue to recruit the best talent our nation has to offer, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. This politically motivated decision is a clear violation of civil rights and a reversal of the progress the Department has made in this area. I am deeply disappointed in this turn of events, and I am appalled at the President’s continued targeting of these brave Americans.”
