Langevin Statement on Senate Republican’s “Skinny” COVID-19 Relief Bill

WARWICK, RI – Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) issued the following statement regarding Senate Republican’s “skinny” $500 billion COVID-19 relief bill which was considered today:

“COVID-19 continues to threaten the lives and livelihoods of millions of people, yet Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has responded by attempting again to advance a grossly insufficient relief bill that even the President says is too small. Senate Republicans are simply out of touch with the needs of the American people and are even ignoring Treasury Secretary Mnuchin’s proposals for a larger package that more robustly addresses the public health and financial challenges before us today.

“With no direct stimulus payments for Americans, food assistance, housing aid, childcare funding, and critical state and local government aid, this bill does not go far enough to help those hit the hardest by the pandemic. Instead of focusing on ramming through a Supreme Court nominee the week before an election, Republican Senators need to acknowledge the gravity of the COVID-19 emergency we are facing and work to ensure Americans reeling from the pandemic are able to keep their heads above water.”
