Langevin Statement on Reports of Russia Offering Bounties on American Troops

Jun 29, 2020 Issues: Armed Services

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee and chairman of its Subcommittee on Intelligence and Emerging Threats and Capabilities, today issued the following statement regarding reports that Russian military intelligence offered bounties on coalition forces in Afghanistan, including American troops:

“I am incredibly alarmed by media reports of Russian military intelligence offering the Taliban bounties for the deaths of United States soldiers. Equally troubling are reports that President Trump was briefed on intelligence assessments regarding these bounties as early as March, yet refused to act on them. These reports require a full accounting. Our troops must be equipped with the best intelligence to keep them safe and allow them to complete their missions. If the President was briefed on these assessments and did nothing, that is a devastating indictment of his character and his fitness for the office he holds.

“Our brave troops put it all on the line to protect our nation and our citizens, and we owe it to them to get to the bottom of this. As a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, I will work diligently with my colleagues to get answers from the Department of Defense as soon as possible.”
