Langevin Statement on the President’s Afghanistan Address

Aug 22, 2017 Issues: Armed Services

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement regarding President Trump’s address on Afghanistan:

“While I appreciate the President’s newfound respect for the complexity of our role in Afghanistan, his announcement last night was light on specifics and absent of all metrics for success, which the American people deserve to hear from their Commander in Chief. Further, he failed to articulate how this strategy is ‘dramatically different’ from our previous approach. I hope that, moving forward, the President will consult with Congress on these details and consider how to best transition the responsibility for security over to the Afghan government so that we can bring our troops home safely as soon as possible.”
