Langevin Statement on Pope's Encyclical on Climate Change and the Environment
Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), a member of the House of Representatives Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), who also serves as the Coalition’s Energy Task Force Chair, released the following statement in response to the papal encyclical of Pope Francis:
“As a lifelong, devoted member of the Catholic faith, I have been so encouraged and inspired by His Holiness Pope Francis and his vision not just for the future of the church but also for a more accepting, peaceful world, and – as evidenced by his encyclical – a planet that is better cared for and protected by all. Pope Francis has the power to engage so many people in this important discussion and call them to action, and I believe his leadership will make a marked difference on our collective efforts to combat climate change.”
The encyclical, “Laudato Si, On the Care of our Common Home,” recognizes the impacts of climate change and the human actions that contribute to its progression, including the burning of fossil fuels. The encyclical goes on to urge the world’s governments to act, calling on developed nations to lead, citing the disproportionate impacts that climate change will have on the world’s poor and those living in developing countries.
SEEC members also released a joint statement regarding the Pope’s remarks:
“For those unmoved by the science of climate change, we hope that Pope Francis’ encyclical demonstrates the virtue and moral imperative for action. Today’s announcement further aligns the scientific and moral case for climate action, yet the political will of many is still askew. The time to act on climate is now, and failure to do so will further damage the planet, its people, and our principles.”
