Langevin Statement on Final Passage of Combined Harvey Relief, Government Funding Package

Sep 8, 2017 Issues: Budget, Vote

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) issued the following statement after voting in favor of the combined government spending, debt ceiling, and Hurricane Harvey relief package that passed the House by a vote of 316-90:

“Today’s vote represents a victory for bipartisanship. Hurricanes do not respect party affiliation, and the brave first responders and volunteers leading the recovery from Harvey and the preparations for Irma are not Republicans or Democrats – they’re Americans. The disaster relief funds included in this bill will provide immediate relief to families taking stock after unprecedented flooding, and they constitute a crucial down payment for the years-long process of rebuilding.

“This bill also staves off the government shutdown that was looming at the end of the month and will allow the government to continue paying its bills. I am thankful that the President was willing to work with Democratic leaders to come to this compromise, a welcome departure from his rhetoric. Congress cannot continue to subject itself to these funding crises, and I hope the President takes the opportunity to build on this deal and work with Democrats to craft a compassionate, responsible budget.”
