Langevin Statement on Appointment to Cyberspace Solarium Commission
WASHINGTON - Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Cybersecurity Caucus and a senior member of the House Committees on Armed Services and Homeland Security, issued the following statement after Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi appointed him to the Cyberspace Solarium Commission created under the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019:
“I am honored to receive Leader Pelosi’s appointment to the Cyberspace Solarium Commission. In the decade I have worked on cybersecurity policy, it has become abundantly clear that we need strong strategic leadership to guide policymaking in this new domain. The threats we face, which range from interference in our democracy to disruption of our critical infrastructure, are only growing as all elements of our society become connected to the Internet. The challenges to American power in cyberspace are also growing, and our adversaries have repeatedly shown their willingness to target our systems for exploitation and attack.
“It is imperative that we use the opportunity afforded by the Solarium Commission to develop a strategic framework that encompasses these challenges and ensures the United States continues to benefit from global cyber stability. It is my expectation that such a strategy will encompass all elements of national power - economic, diplomatic and military - and help contextualize cyber in the broader national and economic security discussion. I thank Senator Sasse for developing the idea of this Commission and Leader Pelosi for her appointment. I look forward to beginning this important work.”
