Langevin Praises Obama Selections of National Security Leaders; Says Nominations Will Benefit Cybersecurity Efforts
Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) released the following statement reacting to President Obama’s announcement today nominating current CIA Director Leon Panetta as Secretary of Defense, and General David Petraeus, Commander of US forces in Afghanistan, as Director of the CIA.
“I give the President high marks on his nomination of Leon Panetta and General David Petraeus to lead the Department of Defense and Central Intelligence Agency. Having had the opportunity to work with both of these leaders from my seats on the Intelligence and Armed Services committees, I know their impressive backgrounds and their extensive knowledge about the many different aspects of our national security ensures that we have proven capable leaders heading our intelligence and military communities.
“I am particularly pleased to know that Director Panetta will have a full appreciation for the increasing sense of urgency with which we must approach cybersecurity issues. Earlier this year, Panetta warned that ‘the next Pearl Harbor could very well be a cyber-attack.’ His leadership in speaking out and raising awareness about the risk of cyber threats to our critical infrastructure and sensitive information has been invaluable for those of us working closely to address vulnerabilities in these areas. As head of the CIA, he saw first-hand and understood the threats posed to our networks. We must act more quickly to protect ourselves and it is vital to have a reliable partner at the Defense Department.
“I also have a great deal of respect for General Petraeus and appreciate his unwavering leadership in Iraq and now Afghanistan. The brave men and women of the CIA have been the pointy end of the spear in our nation’s fight against Al Qeada and their affiliates. They carry out this mission often without acknowledgement for their individual service or sacrifices. I know General Petraeus will be an excellent leader for this unique team, and I look forward to continuing to support their work as a member of the Intelligence committee.
“Finally, I am grateful for Secretary Gates’ continued service through these challenging times, during two wars overseas and through a period of transition at home. I wish him the very best in his retirement.”
