Langevin Introduces Resolution in Support of National Cybersecurity Commission

May 13, 2016 Issues: Cybersecurity

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Cybersecurity Caucus, introduced a resolution yesterday in support of the Commission on Enhancing National Cybersecurity, which was established by Executive Order from President Barack Obama.

“The economic competitiveness and the national security of the United States are integrally tied to the security of our information systems, and this kind of far-reaching action is exactly what we need to move forward in closing our aperture of vulnerability in cyberspace,” said Langevin. “Strengthening our network security and protecting critical infrastructure against cyber attack requires a partnership between government, industry, academia, and security researchers, and this commission brings those stakeholders to the table to ensure we are putting best practices into effect and protecting American interests at home and abroad.”

The establishment of the national commission was part of President Obama’s Cybersecurity National Action Plan (CNAP) released in February. The plan addresses short- and long-term strategic goals to strengthen cybersecurity. In addition to creating the commission, the plan also calls for a $19 billion investment in cybersecurity, with $3.1 billion of that designated to modernize outdated government IT systems.

“The President’s Cybersecurity National Action Plan demonstrated a heartfelt commitment to tackling the immense challenges we face when it comes to securing private and public networks and protecting the privacy of Americans,” Langevin continued. “This issue demands a comprehensive strategy that evolves along with technology. As a co-chair of the CSIS Commission on Cybersecurity for the 44th Presidency, I know the value of venues like the Commission for advancing policy discussions, and I look forward to working with Chair Tom Donilon, Vice Chair Sam Palmisano, and the Commission’s other esteemed members to strengthen our nation’s cyber defenses.”
