Langevin Condemns Trump’s National Emergency Declaration

Feb 15, 2019 Issues: Armed Services, Immigration

WASHINTON – Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), a senior member of the House Homeland Security and Armed Services Committees, issued the following statement condemning President Trump’s decision to declare a national emergency and use military construction funds for his border wall:

“The President’s plan to divert military funds to pay for an ineffective and unnecessary border wall jeopardizes our national security and will have immediate impacts on military personnel.  Emergency authorities may only be exercised for legitimate national security purposes, not abused for political reasons because the President cannot get his way in Congress. I have every confidence that the courts will overturn this irresponsible act.

“Improving our border security is a challenge our nation must address together, but solutions should be grounded in reality, not the result of political posturing. Ironically, Congress showed what bipartisan compromise looks like by passing a funding bill last night that makes investments in real solutions at our border.

“During his announcement this morning, the President said of the emergency declaration: ‘I didn’t need to do this.’ On this, I agree with the President. His actions today represent a clear violation of Constitutional principles. Congress must act to protect the system of checks and balances set up by our founders, or else this will become a day we remember as a turning point in our Republic.”
