Langevin Celebrates 50th Anniversary of the Architectural Barriers Act
Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI), co-chair of the Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus, issued the following statement regarding a resolution he introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) of 1968, legislation that required accessibility accommodations in federal buildings for individuals with physical disabilities:
“The ABA was an important precursor to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and it helped pave the way towards a more inclusive and accessible America. I commend my congressional predecessors and President Lyndon B. Johnson for their foresight to enact this landmark legislation.
“People with disabilities deserve to live a life free of discrimination, and while we have made significant progress in achieving this, our work remains far from finished. I will continue to identify and break down barriers so all Americans are able to fully participate in society with dignity and respect.”
