Langevin Calls on Vice President Pence to Invoke the 25th Amendment and Remove Trump from Office

Jan 12, 2021 Issues: Rhode Island, Vote

WASHINGTON – Later this evening, Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) will vote in favor of H. Res. 21, a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to relieve President Donald J. Trump of his duties and become Acting President. The resolution makes specific references to President Trump’s actions, in clear violation of his oath of office, that culminated in the insurrection at the United States Capitol during the Joint Session of Congress to Count Electoral Votes last Wednesday, January 6, 2021. The following may be attributed to Congressman Langevin:

“Following the violence that rocked the Capitol and claimed the lives of five Americans, it is clear that President Trump cannot remain in office. The American people watched in horror as a mob incited by the President himself wreaked havoc in an effort to undermine our fair and free electoral process. It was an assault on our democracy that can never take place again.

“At this dark moment in our nation’s history, Vice President Pence must fulfill his Constitutional duty, declare the President unfit to serve, and assume the mantle of the Presidency. I remind Vice President Pence that the American people are watching and that history will judge those who overlooked the shameful and grotesque actions of a President more focused on keeping power than leading our great nation during this time of crisis. I hope that the Vice President will do what is right and convene the Cabinet immediately.

“Should Vice President Pence fail to do his duty, Congress will act swiftly to impeach President Trump for violating his oath of office and igniting the fuse that caused so much pain and distress in our nation’s capital and threatened the foundation of our democracy.”
