Langevin Applauds President Biden’s Immediate Action to Confront the COVID-19 Pandemic

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today applauded President Joe Biden’s swift action to confront the pandemic with his administration’s newly unveiled National Strategy for the COVID-19 Response and Pandemic Preparedness, as well as a series of executive actions to expand testing and vaccination operations nationwide, increase personal protective equipment (PPE) supply, and safely reopen the economy and schools. The following statement may be attributed to Congressman Langevin:

“President Biden has wasted no time in getting to work for the American people and implementing meaningful policies that will help crush the virus, ensure working families’ health and economic wellbeing, and create a more resilient and equitable country. I am pleased that his administration has moved swiftly on a robust national strategy that aims to get more Americans tested and vaccinated.

“There is no easy fix to the crisis we are confronting, and there is no time to spare. I commend President Biden’s commitment to a whole-of-government response to see that we turn the corner on this pandemic. President Biden will do what President Trump failed to by using the Defense Production Act to get vital supplies to our frontline workers and institutions. His comprehensive plan to safely reopen and operate schools, childcare provider sites, and colleges and universities will ensure learning continues and help parents return to the workplace.

“Today’s actions complement the President’s Day One executive action to provide economic relief to Americans reeling from the pandemic, extend housing moratoriums to keep roofs over families’ heads, and return to our leadership role on the global stage with respect to climate change and global health. Furthermore, President Biden’s actions to reverse shortsighted and cruel immigration policies implemented by the previous administration will also help many come out of the shadows and contribute to our great country, including the nearly 700,000 DACA recipients who know no other place but the United States as their home. Finally, the implementation of a mask mandate on federal sites will promote safety at a critical time as the virus continues to take its toll on our nation.”

The COVID-19 response related executive actions follow the announcement of President Biden’s “American Rescue Plan.” Congressman Langevin supports the $1.9 trillion relief package that includes direct economic payments to individuals, extended weekly unemployment benefits, billions in grants and loans for small businesses, and dedicated funding for expanded national testing and vaccination operations.
