Helping Businesses Create Jobs

Mar 31, 2011

Dear Friends,

Improving the economy and increasing job opportunities remains my top priority in Washington and Rhode Island. Government will never be as effective in creating jobs as the private sector, and I’m committed to easing burdens on small businesses and providing them access to resources.

As I continue holding events and meetings in my District to address these issues, I am opposing efforts by some in Congress to arbitrarily slash the budget, at a potential cost of 700,000 jobs, while eliminating critical programs like college aid and job training. I support thoughtful cuts that also consider excessive health care and defense spending, and changing unfair and outdated sections of the tax code. Above all, both parties need to come together and find a long-term solution to our fiscal challenges.

As your representative, I enjoy hearing your thoughts, whether in person or in writing. Please stay in touch via email, Facebook and Twitter to keep the conversation going, and check out my YouTube and Flickr pages.

Sincerely,

Jim Langevin

Focusing on Small Business

Recognizing an opportunity to create jobs in Rhode Island, I brought together representatives from key organizations, as well as some of our state’s most successful businesswomen, for a Women in Small Business forum. Women account for only about a quarter of small businesses in Rhode Island, but we have an opportunity for growth if we make our talented women entrepreneurs aware of programs, such as one that addresses gender inequities in federal contracts awards.

Military Action in Libya

While military intervention should always be a last resort, I believe we have, thus far, played an appropriate and responsible role in Libya with the international support needed to respond to an urgent humanitarian need. The mission must remain focused on protecting civilians, with the United States acting as part of a broad coalition. Congress must conduct rigorous oversight and confirm that the cost the America people are being asked to bear is in line with the role the President has described.

Introducing Practical Legislation

The Executive Cyberspace Coordination Act addresses dangerous gaps in cybersecurity and builds on the High School Cyber Challenge I just launched in Rhode Island by giving more students a chance to develop the skills needed to protect us from cyber threats.

The Foster Youth Financial Security Act protects against identity theft and offers foster children a path to an economically stable future. As the Providence Journal recently reported, current practices put these already-vulnerable children at a greatly increased risk of financial abuse.
