Opinion Piece on Pursing Peace & Security in Iraq and Afghanistan - Our nation’s long-term commitment to securing and rebuilding Iraq and Afghanistan remains strong, and nothing compares to experiencing the front lines firsthand. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I recently led a small group of my colleagues to these two critical war zones to learn more about our current obligations, and what those on the ground -- our military, diplomats and non-governmental organizations -- think our role and responsibilities should be in the years to come.

Statement on Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009 - Madam Speaker, I rise today in support of H.R. 2346, the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2009.  The funding in this bill will provide our men and women in uniform the tools they need to protect our nation, while recognizing the sacrifices they and their families have made for this country.

Statement in Support of the Defense Authorization - Madam Speaker, I rise in support of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2009.  Having served on the House Armed Services Committee, I know that it handles some of the most complicated and contentious issues before Congress, but through a combination of hard work and a commitment to bipartisanship, it has been able to assemble a good bill that all Members should support.  I would particularly like to thank Chairman Skelton and Ranking Member Hunter for their leadership and their efforts to enhance our national security.

Statement on Supplemental Appropriations Act for Fiscal Years 2008-2009 - Madam Speaker, today the House is addressing two of the most important issues facing our nation: the Iraq war and the poor state of our economy.  We have the opportunity to force a change in our Iraq strategy while providing much-needed assistance to returning troops and Americans struggling to make ends meet.
