Congress Extends Unemployment Benefits - WARWICK, RI - Congressmen Patrick J. Kennedy and Jim Langevin voted again today to provide an additional 20 weeks of unemployment benefits for more than 4,000 Rhode Islanders, who have exhausted their current benefits. H.R. 3548, the Worker, Home Ownership and Business Assistance Act of 2009, extends unemployment insurance benefits in every state by 14 weeks, with an additional 6 weeks in high unemployment states like Rhode Island. The legislation had been held up in the Senate after originally passing the House in September.

Langevin Infuriated Over Financial Sector Bonuses - WARWICK, RI - Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today expressed outrage over news of more massive bonuses to Wall Street executives, including $198 million to be distributed by AIG next March and indications that Goldman Sachs is on track to provide a record payout to its executives by the end of 2009.

Langevin, Kennedy Work to Extend Unemployment Benefits - WASHINGTON, DC - Congressmen Patrick J. Kennedy and Jim Langevin will today vote to provide an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits in states where the unemployment rate exceeds 8.5 percent, including Rhode Island. H.R. 3548, the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2009, once enacted, will help approximately 2,500 Rhode Islanders who are projected to run out of unemployment compensation by the end of September. It will also help the nearly 4,500 Rhode Islanders who will exhaust their benefits before the end of this year.

Economic Development Grant Slated for Quonset - WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke today announced a $3.88 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant to the Quonset Development Corporation in North Kingstown, R.I., to improve access to 145 acres of land in the Commerce Park District by building a connector road and bridge over a major rail and road right-of-way. The project, made possible because of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), is expected to create additional jobs and private investment in the region.

Langevin Supports Pay-As-You-Go - WARWICK, RI - Congressman Jim Langevin will today vote for H.R. 2920, Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act, which requires Congress to offset the costs of tax cuts or increases in spending with savings elsewhere in the budget.
