Langevin Statement on Trump’s 2018 Budget Framework

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s budget framework for Fiscal Year 2018:

“President Trump’s budget has realized many of our worst fears by proposing dramatic cuts for programs that protect everyday Americans. At a time when too many Americans are still unemployed or underemployed, the President is seeking to eviscerate job training and workforce development initiatives. His budget eliminates funding that helps people heat their homes and find affordable housing – literally leaving them out in the cold. Just this week I delivered Meals on Wheels to an elderly man in Rhode Island and cuts to programs like these will have a devastating impact on countless Americans who depend on them. Furthermore, this budget cuts programs that protect our environment, promote the arts, educate our youth, and invest in scientific and medical innovations that create 21st Century jobs.

“The budget does acknowledge the intense harm that has been caused by defense sequestration, which has long hampered the Department of Defense. It makes important investments in our readiness and our men and women in uniform. The United States faces a variety of adversaries from across the globe, and we need a more lethal fighting force to combat these threats. However, repealing defense sequestration must be done in concert with eliminating the caps on non-defense spending as well; it cannot come at the expense of critical domestic programs that support families and grow our economy. It is also particularly troubling to see deep cuts to the State Department, which in many ways supplements the Department of Defense’s efforts when it comes to enhancing our national security.

“The cuts proposed by President Trump today would sink the budget to a historic low, creating rampant insecurity in the lives of Americans. I believe we can defend our country from strategic threats while still working to deter economic insecurity here at home. We can invest in our society, spurring growth and providing a backstop of security in our day-to-day lives. Unfortunately, this budget fails on all levels to recognize that we can achieve these goals without sacrificing the future of our children, our families and our country.”
