Langevin Statement on Supreme Court Decision on Same-Sex Marriage

Jun 26, 2015 Issues: LGBT Rights

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) released the following statement in response to today’s Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which reaffirms the rights of same-sex couples and prohibits states from denying marriage rights to same-sex couples:

“It is an exciting and historic day in America. Same-sex couples previously treated as second-class citizens will soon have the freedom to marry regardless of where they live. We will look back on this day and recognize it as a milestone for human rights and, I hope, as a turning point in the acceptance, inclusion and equal treatment of members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

“I was so proud when Rhode Island was ahead of the curve on this issue, legalizing same-sex marriage more than two years ago. That pride is magnified today as the United States dismantles another barrier of discrimination, bringing us one step closer to equal rights for all.”
