Langevin Statement on RI Same Sex Marriage

May 2, 2013 Issues: LGBT Rights, Rhode Island

Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) released the below statement prior to the scheduled signing of state legislation legalizing same sex marriage in Rhode Island. The 2011 column Langevin published in the Providence Journal advocating for marriage equality can be found here. He plans to attend tonight’s bill signing ceremony at the State House.

“I salute all of our state’s leaders who made this issue a priority and applaud the tremendous efforts of the passionate citizens who would not rest until Rhode Island embraced marriage equality. Today marks a wonderful moment in our state’s long tradition of striving for freedom and equality, and it is particularly gratifying to think of the even more special celebrations that will happen among loving Rhode Islanders as a result of this occasion. Moving forward, it is time for Washington, DC, to follow the example of Rhode Island and the other states that have stood up for the principle that everyone deserves the same treatment and recognition under the law. I join all supporters of marriage equality in continuing this fight at the national level.”
