Dear Friends,

As we enter the holiday season, it is important to remember those among us who may need assistance during these tough economic times. Despite facing rising unemployment, foreclosures, and food and energy costs, I believe Rhode Islanders are resilient and at our best when challenged.

Over the past year I have traveled around the district, visiting food pantries, soup kitchens and Community Action Programs.  Everywhere I go, demand for their services is up but funding is down. And while the challenges are great in every corner of the state, I leave my visits heartened and grateful for these non-profits and their legions of volunteers. Not only do they continue to provide a wide range of social services, they treat their clients and guests with respect and a smile. As we work to get through these days together, it is important to never underestimate how the simplest of kind gestures can go a long way to helping someone else.

Through these challenging times, I pledge to continue my work in Washington, D.C., to try to ease the burdens on Rhode Island families where ever I can. In October, I supported the extension of unemployment benefits, which was finally signed into law this month.  This law extends unemployment benefits for seven weeks nationwide, and for thirteen additional weeks in states, like Rhode Island, with above-average unemployment.

I encourage you to remember your neighbors in the coming months and consider volunteering your time or making a donation to any of the hundreds of agencies working to make a difference in our communities. Many agencies are ready to accept non-perishable food, your gently used coats, hats and mittens, or your time, in addition to monetary gifts.
As always, if you or someone you know needs assistance, please do not hesitate to call my office or visit the United Way 2-1-1 in Rhode Island website.  We can point you in the right direction. Many in our community - from our Community Action Programs and Rhode Island Housing to food pantries - are ready to help, especially during these difficult times.

Langevin recently participated in Rhode Island Community Food Bank's release of its 2008

"Status Report on Hunger in Rhode Island".

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving.
Thank you for your continued interest and support. Please do not hesitate to contact me about your priorities and concerns as the 110th Congress continues.

Sincerely,

Jim Langevin
