Dear Friends,
August is a wonderful time of year to be home from Washington, working in Rhode Island. This past month was filled with meeting constituents, touring businesses and preparing to come back into session in September.
Aside from the rising cost of energy, the number one concern on everyone's mind was our costly and inefficient health care system. I know I have said it before, but health care is my top priority.
I am hopeful that over the next year we will see a constructive and positive debate on how to fix this pressing issue. In the meantime, please take a moment to learn about my American Health Benefits Plan. Let me know what you think! |

Langevin met with Ellen Smith at his East Greenwich Town Hall meeting and discussed his continued support for the Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act. Smith is an Arthritis Foundation ambassador.

Langevin posed for photos after reading to Meeting Street School students as part of their summer reading program.

Langevin recently joined the Internal Revenue Service at the Providence Veterans Medical Center to continue raising awareness about the economic stimulus payment.
Did you know? |
Many Rhode Islanders, who normally are not required to file an income tax return, are eligible for the economic stimulus payment. The IRS estimates that about 22,000 Rhode Islanders have not claimed their stimulus payment. The Stimulus Payment Return must be filed by October 15, 2008. For more information please call The Rebate Hotline at 1-866-234-2942, or check the IRS Website. |

Langevin was the keynote speaker at the Tri Town Community Action Program GED graduation in Johnston. In July, he joined an overwhelming bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives to approve the Higher Education Opportunity Act (H.R. 4137), which will address the soaring price of college tuition and remove other obstacles that make it harder for qualified students to go to college.

Langevin learned about the many artifacts in East Greenwich's Varnum Armory on a recent tour. In July, he voted for the $72.2 billion Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act for FY2009, which sends a clear message to America's servicemen and women, their families, and our veterans that we all appreciate and respect their service and sacrifice.

The Friends of Providence Dominican Association - Victor Martinez, Julio Aza and Andres Almonte - recently honored Langevin with a plaque sent from the Dominican Republic Human Rights Commission for his continuous support.

These are indeed challenging times and I am working tirelessly in Washington, D.C. to try to ease the burdens on Rhode Island families where ever I can. As always, if you or someone you know needs help, please do not hesitate to call my office. We can point you in the right direction. Many organizations in our community - from our Community ActionPrograms to Rhode Island Housing to food pantries - stand ready to help during these difficult times.

Langevin helped to announce an $11.8 million Centers of Biological Research Excellence (COBRE) grant from the National Institutes of Health to study tissue repair at Roger Williams Medical Center. Langevin is pictured with Dr. Vincent Falanga, head of the research team.
Thank you for your continued interest and support. Please do not hesitate to contact me about your priorities and concerns as the 110th Congress continues.
